The game opens with Nero hurrying towards the central Opera House where the Order of the Sword is conducting a ceremony, his right arm in a sling. Meanwhile Kyrie, Nero’s romantic interest, is beginning to open the ceremony with a song and is disappointed not to find Nero in the audience. She begins her song none the less as Nero encounters several Scarecrow demons on his way to the Opera House; he easily dispatches them without breaking his stride and arrives at the Opera House just in time to hear the end of Kyrie’s song.

Following this, Kyrie joins Nero in the audience where she finds Nero has left a present for her in the form of a gold necklace. The High Priest of the Order of the Sword Sanctus beckons the Order members to join him in prayer; Nero is visibly bored by this and is about to leave despite Kyrie’s protests when his right arm begins to glow ominously. At this moment, Dante bursts through the ceiling and assassinates Sanctus.

The knights quickly rally to avenge their fallen leader but are easily dispatched by the assassin. Nero, under the impression that Kyrie is in danger, attacks Dante initiating a fight between the two. As Dante gains the upper hand, Nero reveals his demonic right arm named the Devil Bringer and uses its power to seemingly kill Dante by impaling him with his own sword, only to find that Dante survived relatively unharmed. Dante comments on Nero’s power before quickly departing after showing Nero that the knights he killed were not human but possessed a demonic appearance.

Nero is charged with capturing Dante and bringing him back to the Order to answer for his crimes by Credo, the leader of the Orders knights and Kyrie’s brother. Upon leaving the Opera House however, a demonic horde begins to lay waste to the city. Nero and Kyrie are separated as Nero begins to slay the demons. Nero fights his way into the depths of Fortuna Castle, on the way, the player is allowed to witness a scene revealing that Sanctus has been infused with the soul of a demon to revive him. The player is also introduced to Agnus, the stuttering scientist and mastermind of the Orders demonic power manipulation.

Nero finally reaches Agnus' facility where he is defeated and heavily injured, the broken Katana Yamato responds to Nero and mends itself before flying into his hand. Nero fends off Agnus' attacks with the aid of a spectral blue demon hovering behind him before he collapses in exhaustion.

Agnus flees back to Sanctus and informs him of Nero’s new-found power, Credo vows to take care of Nero before while Gloria takes over Nero’s pursuit of Dante.

Nero is confronted by Credo who also has been infused with demonic power, giving him the characteristics of an Angel, yet is defeated by Nero. However, Kyrie arrives in time to witness Nero with his demonic arm standing over her defeated brother. Agnus uses the confusion and distraction on Nero’s part to kidnap Kyrie and flee. Credo postpones his feud with Nero until he can investigate the situation. Nero then once more meets Dante, his quest to capture him long since forgotten; he wishes to simply pass Dante by. Dante however, wants Yamato, the sword used by his twin-brother Vergil, returned to him. A fight ensues where Dante is victorious; however, he decides to let Nero keep Yamato after the latter has “cooled down”. Following this is, it is revealed that Gloria is in fact Trish, Dante’s partner in his demon hunting business “Devil May Cry.”

Nero reaches Sanctus and “The Savior” an enormous statue which the Order intends to bring to life using Nero and Yamato’s power. Using Kyrie as a human shield, Sanctus is successful in detaining Nero. Sanctus reveals that the Savior requires the essence of Sparda to be reach full power, he origionally intended Dante be used as the core but accepts Nero as a suitable substitute. Credo attempts to rescue the two but is mortally wounded by Sanctus, Dante arrives and requests Nero give him his sword back. As Nero is absorbed into The Savior, he requests Dante “come and get it.”

Agnus uses Yamato to open an enormous Hellgate releasing a multitude of demons onto the city; Sanctus arrives with The Savior and begins to exterminate the demons. Dante, upon hearing Credo’s dying request to rescue Kyrie and Nero fights his way back towards the city, on his way he destroys the three smaller Hellgates used to release the demons.

Dante arrives back at the Opera House and kills Agnus, he then retrieves Yamato and uses it to destroy the largest of the Hellgates before confronting Sanctus and The Savior. After discovering that The Savior is invincible from the outside, Dante drives Yamato into the chest of The Savior where it is retrieved by Nero. Nero defeats Sanctus inside The Savior and rescues Kyrie; finally, Nero uses the powers of his Devil Bringer to destroy The Savior and Sanctus once and for all. Dante departs after entrusting Nero with Yamato. Nero and Kyrie’s tender reunion is interrupted by another demon attack; Nero draws his sword and begins the fight as the credits roll and the game ends.

In an extra, ending scene, at the Devil May Cry, Trish and Lady bicker over the small reward she is giving, with Lady accusing Trish for having disguised as Gloria and delivering Sparda's sword to the Order. A phone call rings, with a customer having another job for Dante to do, and the trio moves out to help.

Presentation

A teaser trailer was shown at E³ 2005, depicting Dante traveling through snow and quickly performing some fast, stylish moves. A more substantial second trailer was released at that year's Tokyo Game Show (TGS), where it showed a more rugged and older Dante in a city-like setting. These two teasers showed very little detail of the game itself.

At the 2006 Tokyo Game Show a more complete trailer debuted, along with a playable demo featuring the character Nero.

Images in the issue of Famitsu released March of 2007, show Dante as a playable character.

On September 6, 2006, Japanese video game magazine Famitsu reported that series star Dante will not be playing the main role in Devil May Cry 4. Instead, a new character named Nero, voiced and motion captured by Johnny Yong Bosch, will take the lead role.

Nero resembles both Dante and his twin brother, Vergil, and is part of the Order of the Sword, a group of warriors who worship Sparda.

Nero's attire consists of blue jeans, a long purple coat, and a red vest. He wields a revolver named Blue Rose which has a distinctive under-and-over double barrel and a decorated single-edged sword called the Red Queen. In the trailer, Nero views Dante as a villain after witnessing Dante murdering members of the Order.

Nero's right arm seems to resemble a demon's and glows supernaturally, and is the source of his "Devil Bringer" power. He apparently was not born with his arm in this state.

Dante, the primary character in the rest of the series, will also be playable and will have updated versions of the core animations used in Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, as well as all four of his now trademark styles: Trickster, Royal Guard, Gunslinger, and Sword Master which can be switched at will. Game Informer revealed that he will not just be an unlockable, but will be playable as part of the storyline. In addition, other characters from previous titles will return, but Kobayashi was not at liberty to reveal who.

Gameplay

Nero's weapons shown in the trailer and gameplay videos are his sword the Red Queen, his revolver the Blue Rose, as well as the powers of his "Devil Bringer" arm.

Red Queen is based on the swords used by the Order of the Sword, and Nero has upgraded his to make it much stronger. When Nero twists the motorcycle-like handgrip, a propellant is released which adds to the force of the sword's impact. Blue Rose's over-and-under double barrel allow it to fire two shots at once, and is strong enough to penetrate armor. The Order normally looks down on guns as dishonorable, and only Nero uses one. His arm's "Devil Bringer" power adds a third element of gameplay (in addition to guns and swords), allowing Nero to grab distant enemies, pull them in to be attacked, push them away, slam them into the ground, as well as allowing him to zoom across areas at certain points. Also, it has context-sensitive uses in certain battles, for example spinning the Frost enemies overhead.

Producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi indicated that he is focusing his optimizations on gameplay so that controlling characters is less difficult, and accessible to all players. Director Hideaki Itsuno also noted that the game will have a more forgiving learning curve than Devil May Cry 3, but will eventually ramp up to that game's level and that players, "won't be able to go back". He further stated that Devil May Cry 4 will feature more weapons, maneuvers, enemies, locations, music, and cutscenes than all the previous releases combined. DMC4 looks to continue the series' tradition of huge bosses, as the demo features a battle between Nero and a gigantic fire demon called Berial. Kobayashi revealed through Game Informer that Nero will not be gaining new weapons from bosses like Dante did in Devil May Cry 3, but will instead power up the Devil Bringer.

Devil May Cry 3 opens in Dante's as-of-yet unnamed shop as a mysterious man called Arkham appears to offer an invitation from Dante's brother Vergil, in the form of a brutal demon attack. After Dante defeats the monsters inside and outside his shop, an immense tower erupts from the ground a short distance away. Sensing Vergil atop the structure, Dante takes the situation as a challenge.

At the tower's entrance Dante encounters Cerberus, defeats him and claims the monster's soul, which transforms into a new weapon. In what becomes a recurring game mechanic, the souls of some defeated boss monsters are transformed into new weapons for Dante's arsenal. Dante is then attacked by a woman on a motorcycle, whose name later becomes Lady. It is revealed in subsequent cutscenes that Arkham is working for Vergil and they plan to take Dante's half of the amulet their mother gave them, and use its power to reactivate the tower's ability to connect the human and demon worlds. It is also revealed that Arkham is Lady's father, that he murdered her mother, and that she is pursuing him to seek revenge.

After numerous battles, an encounter with a being calling itself Jester, and another run-in with Lady, Dante attains the tower's summit and battles Vergil. Vergil soundly defeats Dante, steals Dante's amulet, and departs. As a result of his defeat Dante's dormant devil powers emerge, and he sets off in pursuit. He eventually catches up in the control room located in the tower's basement, where Vergil is having no luck reactivating the tower. The brothers battle again and seem evenly matched, until they are interrupted first by Lady and then Jester. Jester reveals that he is in fact Arkham, and has been manipulating them all to reactivate the tower. Arkham's plan is to cross over to the demon world and steal the Force Edge, the dormant form of Sparda's original sword which contains the bulk of Sparda's old power, and use it to rule over a demon-infested Earth. The tower then transforms as the spell is broken, carrying Arkham upwards to the summit, while Vergil vanishes in the confusion.

Dante battles his way back up the tower, and eventually fights Lady for the right to pursue Arkham. Dante wins, and Lady lends him her most powerful weapon. Reaching the summit once again, Dante crosses over to the demon world and catches up with Arkham, who has assumed Sparda's demonic form. Overwhelmed by the power, Arkham transforms again into a blob-like creature and battles Dante. Halfway through the fight, as Arkham is gloating that Dante has no chance, Vergil reappears and the brothers work together to bring down Arkham. Arkham is thrown out of the demon world in a weakened state and lands atop the tower, where Lady kills him. In the demon world, Dante and Vergil battle over ownership of the Force Edge and the amulet halves. Dante is victorious. As the portal closes, Vergil decides to stay behind and vanishes into the darkness with one half of the amulet.

Returning to the human world, Dante meets Lady outside the tower where she coins the phrase "devil may cry" while trying to comfort Dante over the loss of his brother. They form a friendship and the beginnings of a partnership in demon-slaying, and he names his shop "Devil May Cry". A scene after the credits reveals a weakened yet determined Vergil, still in the demon world, where he charges into battle against his father's old foe, Mundus.

Devil May Cry 2 begins with Lucia and Dante separately entering a museum where an important item called the Medaglia is stored. After defeating a group of demons in the museum, Lucia invites Dante to follow her to the Dumary Island, where he is introduced to Matier, her mother. Matier explains that she once fought alongside Dante's father, Sparda, to defend the island against demons. She asks Dante to help fight Arius, an international businessman who uses demonic power and seeks to conquer the world. Dante flips a coin in answer, and decides to help when the coin lands on heads. After Dante leaves Matier and Lucia discuss the Arcana, the items required for Arius to raise Argosax.

Lucia eventually confronts Arius, who reveals that she was his creation. When Lucia moves to strike Arius, he uses his magic to blast her away. Shortly afterward, Dante meets up with Lucia, who gives him the last of the Arcana before leaving. Dante then encounters Matier and tries to pass the Arcana to her. Matier, in turn, asks Dante to take the Arcana to save Lucia, who has gone to fight Arius again. Dante flips the coin again to decide if he will help; it lands on heads, and he departs to aid Lucia. Meanwhile, Lucia enters the Uroboros tower and attacks Arius, who captures her. Dante arrives and trades the Arcana for Lucia, then attacks Arius. To escape, Arius forces Dante to decide between saving Lucia or killing him.

Lucia, worried about the ritual and conflicted about herself, wonders how they will stop Arius. Dante waves her off, stating he will find a way. Dante leaves Lucia to think as he departs to defeat Arius. Matier arrives a short time later, sets Lucia's mind at ease, and decides to rejoin the fight against Arius. Dante arrives to find Arius in the middle of his immortality-inducing ritual. Apparently not at all phased by the completion of the ceremony, Dante stands confident. Another fight ensues, in which Dante finishes Arius off with his pistols. Outside, Lucia confronts Dante and demands that he kill her because she fears she will become a demon herself. Before the issue can be resolved, a large stream of energy strikes the tower and a portal to the demon world is opened. Dante and Lucia argue over who will enter and close it from the inside; Dante offers to leave the issue up to fate. He flips the coin and it once again lands on heads, leaving Dante to enter the portal to deal with Argosax after leaving the coin with Lucia.

After Dante departs, Arius returns to life bearing demonic power. While Lucia fights Arius, he finds himself injured and attempts to distract her, a tactic which fails; Lucia goes on to defeat him. Within the portal, Dante fights and defeats the partially summoned Argosax. Finding the portal closed, Dante instead drives further into the demon realm on a motorcycle. In the aftermath of the battle, Matier attempts to reassure Lucia about Dante's fate, insisting that Sparda returned from a similar trip. Lucia examines the coin Dante left with her and discovers that both sides are identical. Sometime later in Dante's shop, Lucia muses about Dante. Outside the sound of a motorcycle echoes, and Lucia leaves to investigate. It is left up to the player's interpretation if this is Dante or not.

Devil May Cry begins with Dante being attacked in his office by a mysterious woman named Trish. He impresses her by easily brushing off her assault, and tells her that he hunts demons in pursuit of those who killed his mother and brother. She says the attack was a test, and that the demon emperor Mundus, whom Dante holds responsible for the deaths of his family, is planning a return. The scene jumps to their arrival at an immense castle, whereupon Trish abruptly leaps and vanishes over a high wall.

Dante explores the castle and encounters the game's stock enemies, demonic marionettes. He also finds a new sword called Alastor, and battles the first boss, a giant spider demon named Phantom. Dante wins the battle, but in what becomes a recurring theme, the defeated boss monster reappears a short time later in a corridor, forcing the player to choose a narrow escape or to fight in the tight confines. After further exploration and combat, Dante battles a demon named Nelo Angelo, who impresses Dante with his confidence. The demon wins, but suddenly flees upon seeing the half-amulet Dante wears. The demon attacks twice more in later missions, and is eventually revealed to be Dante's identical twin brother, Vergil. After Vergil's final defeat, his amulet joins with his brother's half, and "Force Edge", the game's default sword which belonged to the twins' father, becomes the powerful Sparda sword.

When Dante next meets Trish, she betrays him and reveals that she too is working for Mundus. But when her life is endangered, Dante chooses to save her. Saying he only did so because of her resemblance to his mother, he warns her to stay away. Yet when he finally confronts Mundus, who is about to kill Trish, Dante again chooses to save her and is injured. Mundus tries to finish him off, but Trish takes the attack instead. This unleashes Dante's full power. Dante and Mundus then battle on another plane of existence.

Dante is victorious, and leaves the amulet and sword with Trish's immobile body before departing. Mundus returns and corners Dante, who is now back to his regular strength, before he can flee the island; Trish also returns and lends Dante her power. Dante defeats Mundus, who vows to return and rule the human world. When Trish tries to apologize she begins to cry, and Dante tells her it means she has become human and not just a devil, because "devils never cry". Dante and Trish escape on a plane as the island collapses. After the credits, it is revealed that Dante and Trish are working together as partners, and have renamed the shop "Devil Never Cry".

A young orphan girl who Dante was hired to protect from demons due to a group of brothers wanting a large inheritance. She was in fact a decoy used to divert attention from the real heir to the inheritance. Patty then lives with Dante in his shop, generally criticising his taste in fashion.

The main character of the upcoming game Devil May Cry 4, he resembles both Dante and Dante's brother, Vergil. An orphan that was adopted by Kyrie, he has grown up to be a Holy Knight in the Order of the Sword. He tends to not get along well with others and prefers to work alone, so he is usually given the Order's "dirty work." He wields a sword named Red Queen, a revolver called Blue Rose and the "Devil Bringer" powers of his right arm. The character is voiced and motion captured by Johnny Yong Bosch. games™ notes that some fans believe Nero to actually be Vergil, while others disagree. The truth will only out once the game is released.

Arkham

Arkham is a scholar with supernatural abilities and knowledge about the demon world's folklore. He is taller than Dante and Vergil, bald to the extent of having no eyebrows, and has a scar covering the left side of his face, which is seen to pulsate in a few cutscenes. It is the result of a botched ritual to turn himself into a demon, in which he sacrificed his wife. Like his daughter Lady, he has differently colored eyes. In most of Arkham's scenes he is holding a book in his hands, even in combat.

He is one of the main antagonists in Devil May Cry 3. He first appears in a cut scene in the game's first mission where he walks into Dante's office and offers him an invitation from his brother Vergil.

Arkham is a master manipulator, pitting Dante, Vergil and Lady against each other by preying on their personalities and desires. To Vergil, he plays the role of sycophant, pretending to help Vergil while plotting against him. He taunts and further enrages Lady, who is driven by her need for revenge on him, and later convinces her that his evil acts were Vergil's fault. To Dante he appears in the form of an apparent resident of the tower named Jester, mocking Dante as he alternately advises and challenges him.

His plans are successful, and he is able to open the gate to the demon world. He is the first to retrieve the Force Edge, and with its power combined with the restored halves of Eva's amulet, he acquires a large portion of Sparda's power and takes on Sparda's demonic form. The power overwhelms him however, and he further transforms into a shapeless form when he battles Dante. He is defeated when Vergil teams up with Dante and they cast him out of the demon world, but it is Lady who ultimately kills him.In the Special Edition release of the game he appears (as Jester) as an additional boss character for the player to fight. He is voiced and motion captured (as both Arkham and Jester) by Adam Clark, and credited as "Adam D Clerk" in the game's credits. Arkham's name was originally intended to be Hyne (pronounced Hai-neh) but Reuben Langdon (Dante) thought it would not work in English and convinced Capcom to change it. Jester's name was intended to be Joker.

Lady

Lady first appeared in Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, and later in that game's spin-off manga, as well as the 2007 anime series. In the game, she appears in numerous cutscenes, fights Dante as a boss character, and teams up with Dante during the game’s closing credits, though she is not controllable by the player. She also provides the game’s framing narration, telling the story of how she met Dante and Vergil, and how Dante picked the name "Devil May Cry" for his shop, which was something she had said while trying to comfort Dante.

Her original name, Mary, was given to her by her father Arkham, but she chose to renounce that name when he murdered her mother. Dante first called her "lady" when she refused to tell him her name. She has differently-colored eyes. While still a normal human, she is also an exceptionally skilled firearms expert and extremely acrobatic in close quarters combat. Her most powerful weapon is the Kalina-Ann, a customized missile launcher similar to a MANPADS.

In the anime, she works as a solo devil hunter but sometimes calls on Dante for jobs, and sometimes money that he owes her.

She is voiced by Fumiko Orikasa in the anime.

Arius

Arius is the primary antagonist in Devil May Cry 2. He is an extremely wealthy businessman that owns an international company called Uroboros. He wishes to find the legendary Arcana, artifacts which would allow him to raise the demon Argosax from the demon realm and use that power to control the world. While he is completely human at the outset of the game, he does have access to a variety of powerful magic which allows him to fight against capable demon hunters such as Dante and he is also capable of creating his own demons in a form of his choosing.

Matier

Matier is a secondary character that appeared in Devil May Cry 2. Matier is an old woman and like Lucia, is part of the clan of Vie de Marli. In her younger days, she and her clan fought against the demons alongside Sparda. Matier is cheerful and optimistic, and always seems sure of Dante's eventual victory. She is the one who guides Lucia to reunite the Arcanas (mystical relics) and to lure Dante to their island, to whom she never refers by his name but rather calls "Son of Sparda". At first it is claimed that Matier is Lucia’s mother, but it’s later revealed that Lucia was in fact created by Arius who planned to dispose of her, until Matier found her and raised her as a daughter. In the end she tells Lucia not to worry and that Dante will eventually return from the demon world.

Lucia

Lucia is, alongside Dante, one of the two protagonists of Devil May Cry 2. Lucia is a quick and agile fighter, she uses two ornately crafted curved daggers. Like Dante, she can also Devil Trigger transforming into a demon similar to a bird. Lucia is a member of Vie de Marli, a clan of guardians that have the blood of demons.

She lures Dante to her island so that Matier, her mother, may ask him to help them to defeat Arius, an evil man who has turned their land into a demon paradise. Dante accepts, and he and Lucia start their quests separately. Later in the game it is revealed that Lucia is actually a demon created by Arius but that she was a "defect". However, this does not change Lucia’s objectives and she continues her mission. When she reaches Arius, however, Dante has already defeated him. Dante then takes a motorcycle and goes into the demon world to kill more devils. After Dante leaves, Arius, now completely turned into a monster, rises from the ruins of the buildings. Lucia confronts him and wins the battle. Finally, Lucia is shown waiting in Dante’s shop, flipping his coin continuously. Just then, Lucia hears a motorcycle outside the shop and goes out running. She shares her name with Saint Lucy, a martyred saint, called Lucia in The Divine Comedy where she appeared to help poet Dante Alighieri. The character is voiced by Francoise Gralewski.

Trish

Trish was introduced in Devil May Cry. She also appeared in Devil May Cry 2 as a playable character (where her appearance is a bonus feature and not a part of the game's plot) as well as in the PS2 version of Viewtiful Joe alongside Dante, and as a playable character in the PSP game Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble. She also appears in the anime.

Trish is a creation of Mundus who bears a great resemblance to Eva, Dante’s deceased mother. As a result of her demonic nature she possesses several supernatural abilities, like superhuman strength and lightning powers. In the first game, she hires Dante to help stop Mundus' plan to conquer the human world by opening a gate to the demon world on Mallet Island. Later in the game Dante learns that she is a servant of Mundus, and that her resemblance to Eva was part of a plan to lure Dante to the island so that Mundus' servants can kill him. However, she develops feelings for Dante and helps him defeat Mundus. In the game's epilogue, she and Dante are shown working together as partners out of the renamed "Devil Never Cry" office. In the anime, she has since gone solo but sometimes reappears to work with Dante.

Trish is named after Beatrice Portinari, Dante Alighieri's guide through Paradise in the Divina Commedia. Trish is voiced by Sarah Lafleur in Devil May Cry, and in the anime she is voiced by Atsuko Tanaka.

Enzo

Enzo does not appear in any of the currently released video games within the Devil May Cry series, but was mentioned as an associate of Dante in the manual for the first game. The character has appeared in the novels and manga as Dante's contact with the mercenary world, as well as a friend.

Eva

Eva was the human wife of Sparda and mother of the twins Dante and Vergil. She was killed in a demon attack, but sometime before that she gave each of the boys half of Sparda's amulet as a birthday gift. Eva herself only appears as a photo on Dante's desk and as a voice in a flashback in the first Devil May Cry game. Trish was created to look exactly like Eva. The character (Eva) is voiced by Sarah Lafleur.

Mundus

In the Devil May Cry universe, Mundus was the king of the demon world. He was defeated by Sparda two thousand years before the games. He appears much as a typical angel, dozens of feet tall, with white feathered wings, and a third eye on his forehead.

Mundus served as the main antagonist during the first Devil May Cry, and created Trish (whose appearance was based on Dante's mother Eva) so she could lure Dante to Mallet Island. There, Mundus’ servants tried to kill Dante, but Dante was the ultimate victor, winning Trish’s loyalty and defeating Mundus, who promised to eventually return. He has a cameo appearance at the end of the third game, where he appears as three red glowing orbs in the sky with electricity around them, this was the form Mundus displayed when he was first seen in Devil May Cry. The character is voiced by Tony Daniels.

Sparda

In the Devil May Cry universe, Sparda is a demon that rebelled against his own kind for the sake of the human world two thousand years ago. He defeated the demons and their king, Mundus, and shut the portal to the demon world, sacrificing both his own blood and that of a mortal priestess.

But the bulk of Sparda’s power was trapped in the demon realm, sealed inside his sword, and was only accessible with an amulet he took with him into the human world. This amulet, which can be separated into two parts, was also one of the keys needed to unlock the portal. All its abilities are deactivated if the halves are separated. Near the end of his life he fathered the twins Dante and Vergil with his human wife Eva, and gave his amulet to her as a gift. The boys were each given one half of the amulet by their mother as well as one each of Sparda's other enchanted swords: Rebellion, a sword similar to a Zweihänder, was given to Dante, while Vergil received the sword Yamato, an O-katana.

Vergil

Vergil is a chief antagonist in Devil May Cry 3, though he is betrayed by Arkham at the end of the game's second act (the end of mission 13), and temporarily teams up with Dante near the end. Throughout the game, Vergil seeks to undo the seal of Sparda inside the Temen-ni-gru and claim the entirety of their father's power for his own, regardless of the effects this will have on the human world. To do so he needed Dante's half of their mother's amulet, so he lures his brother out with the intent of taking it by force. Vergil battles Dante three times in the Devil May Cry 3 storyline. Their first battle is on the highest level of Temen-Ni-Gru, where Dante is soundly defeated by Vergil who then takes Dante's amulet. Their final battle is near the entrance to the demon realm, where Vergil is finally defeated.

A cutscene after the game's credits shows Vergil rising to his feet in a lake of blood, and looking into the sky to see three large glowing orbs in the sky – Mundus as he first appeared in Devil May Cry. Vergil decides that if his father was able to fight Mundus he can too, and then charges at the orbs with his sword ready. Vergil survives his encounter with Mundus but despite his valiant effort he becomes enslaved and his name changed to Nelo Angelo. Dante encounters Nelo Angelo three times in Devil May Cry, and each time Nelo Angelo sees Dante's half of the amulet, he flees the battle. In their final encounter, Nelo Angelo uncovers his face to reveal that he is Vergil. In the end Nelo Angelo appears to explode, leaving his half of the amulet behind.

Protagonist of the Devil May Cry video game series, published by Capcom since 2001, currently consisting of three released games and a title under production. The character and Devil May Cry are one of Capcom's flagship game franchises, a franchise which has sold over five million copies worldwide to date as of 2007. Dante has been featured as the main protagonist in the first three games of the series, and he will have a supporting role in the fourth game. The character reprises this role in several Devil May Cry novels and manga volumes, and will be featured in an upcoming anime.

The character is a mercenary dedicated to exterminating demons, a mission he follows in pursuit of those that killed his mother and corrupted his brother. He is the son of Sparda, a demon of great power that rebelled against the demon emperor and defeated his army. As a result of his demonic heritage he possesses numerous superhuman abilities which he uses in combination with a variety of weapons to accomplish his goal. The character was created to fit Hideki Kamiya's vision of a "cool and stylish" man, his personality was based on the titular character of manga series Cobra. The character has been well received by gamers and he has become a popular character, to the extent of being adopted as one of Capcom's mascot characters.

Dante debuted in Devil May Cry, a game originally intended to be a sequel of Capcom's Resident Evil franchise. Dante is confident in his encounters with opponents, and freq

uently taunts boss characters before battling them. In terms of gameplay, while survival horror players (and characters) must ration supplies like ammunition, solve challenging puzzles, and

evade large groups of enemies to advance through the game, Dante has few of these restrictions. Dante's ammunition is unlimited, puzzles are simpler, and battling groups of enemies is the game's main focus.

Series' creator Hideki Kamiya has stated that the titular character from the manga ser

About cigarette, this is simple, I just thought man without cigarette is cool." The reason behind the character's red clothes is that in Japan red is a traditional color for a heroic figure.

Characteristics

In the series, Dante's role is that of a demon slayer who works as a mercenary, specializing in paranormal cases. He is muscular, has whitish hair and is usually seen wearing red clothes. Dante's arsenal usually consists of firearms and melee weapons, including the twin handguns "Ebony and Ivory", as well as a variety of swords. He has supernatural powers, as a result of his half-demon heritage.

Dante is one of the twin sons of Sparda, a

demonic knight who chose to side with humanity and drive back an invasion of the human world by demons. After Sparda's death, Dante and his brother Vergil were raised by their human mother, Eva. When Dante and Vergil were still children, the family was attacked by demons, resulting in Eva's death. This event lead to Dante's commitment to hunting demons in pursue of those that killed his mother.

Dante also has the ability to enter a temporary transformation called "devil trigger". In this state, Dante possesses more speed, steady health regeneration, and further abilities with his equipped melee weapon.

Ebony and Ivory are Dante's handguns, and he never has to reload these or other firearms. They are hand-made with "For Tony Redgrave, By.45 Art Warks" written on them.
